S. Benedetto di Norcia Abbey
Marienberg is a Benedictine Abbey (S. Benedetto di Norcia Abbey) located in Upper Val Venosta valley. The noble Tarasp family from Engadin founded the abbey.
High above Burgusio in Val Venosta valley, at a height of 1340 meters, rests the Cloister S. Benedetto di Norcia, Europe's highest Benedictine Abbey.
The origins of the abbey lie in the nearby little Church of St. Stephen, which itself dates back to the 6th century, making it one of the oldest churches in continental Europe. The oldest part is the crypt, which was consacrated in 1160. Its Romanesque frescoes have remained wonderfully preserved over the centuries.
The Romanesque portal of the convent church is itself a remarkable work, as are the bronze door handles.
