Opened in 1998, the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology presents the history of South Tyrol from the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic (15,000 B.C.).
Along with original finds there are models, reconstructions, pictures, friezes, videos and interactive multimedia stations that give an educational and entertaining insight into the early history of the southern Alpine region.
Ötzi the Iceman (3,300 B.C.) and the artefacts found alongside him form the centrepiece of the exhibition.
Ötzi
Visiting Ötzi in the South Tyrolean Archaeological Museum in Bolzano.
Over 5,000 years ago, a man climbed up to the Val Senales Valley glacier and died there. "Ötzi", dubbed "The Iceman", was found mummified in 1991, together with his clothes, belongings and weapons: an archaeological sensation and a unique snapshot of life in the Bronze Age.
The mummy and the articles found with it have been on show in the South Tyrolean Archaeological Museum since March 1998. Models, reconstructions, 3-D pictures, videos and interactive multimedia stations allow the visitor to gain insight into life in the prehistoric times Ötzi's world.
